A new book from MIC academic Dr Sarah O’Brien tells the stories of Irish immigrants in post-Famine America. Of Memory and the Misplaced draws from 30 memoirs written between 1900 and 1970 and shows the prevalence of intimate and taboo themes in ordinary immigrants’ writing, such as domestic violence, same-sex love, and famine-induced trauma.

A new collaboration between Mary Immaculate College (MIC) historians and Limerick City & County Council explores how everyday life, teaching and learning continued – sometimes with difficulty – throughout the turbulent period of the Irish Revolution. Produced as part of Limerick City & County Council’s Decade of Centenaries programme, Studying Revolution: Accounts of Mary Immaculate College, 1918-1923 collates primary source material to tell the story of how staff & students navigated the revolutionary period, how ordinary life was interrupted and of the times that the war quite literally arrived at the College gates.
A new book from MIC academic Dr Derek Mulcahy tells the story of Limerick’s proud and long-standing culture of civilian marching bands. This tradition began with the temperance movement in the 1830s and went on to play a major role in the social and musical life of the city. Now, ‘By The Left, Quick March - Limerick’s Marching Band Tradition’ explores interviews, newspaper accounts, band records and photographs to tell – for the first time – the full story of these bands. The book is published by Limerick City and County Council in partnership with MIC.

This doctoral programme in Applied Linguistics is a four-year, full-time programme which includes a combination of taught modules (in Year 1 of the programme) and individual research, the principal component being the doctoral thesis.
