Mary Immaculate College (MIC) aims to prioritise the “vital contribution” of external spaces within the campus to promote health and wellbeing for students, staff and the wider community. This is to be achieved through a sustainable landscape-led masterplan for its Limerick campus.
The masterplan—by multi award-winning landscape and architecture firm, Levitt Bernstein—sets out to “highlight and celebrate existing landscape and historic assets whilst creating a clear ‘vision’ for the campus future, supporting built teaching facilities”.
MIC researchers Dr Karen Ní Chlochasaigh, Dr Conchúr Ó Brolcháin and Carmel Nic Airt have published a report into the effectiveness of Irish language book clubs in Irish medium settings at primary and post-primary level.
The Club Leabhar scheme aims to provide opportunities for primary and secondary-level children in Ireland to engage in independent reading and to help foster a sense of enjoyment when engaging with literacy through Irish. The scheme also aims to raise awareness of Irish language literature amongst teachers and children and to develop a greater confidence and competence amongst teachers towards the teaching of Irish literacy in innovative and creative ways in both Gaeltacht and Gaelscoil contexts. The research undertaken by the team assessed the effectiveness of the Club Leabhar scheme and made recommendations as to how it might be improved and expanded in the coming years.
