The Faculty of Arts at Mary Immaculate College (MIC) has been awarded the Bronze Athena Swan award in recognition of its ongoing work to ensure gender equality among both staff and students of the faculty. Awarded by Advance Higher Education, the Athena Swan Charter reaffirms the work in higher education to achieve gender equality objectives, assists in meeting equality legislation requirements and supports the promotion of inclusive working practices. The Bronze award for the Faculty of Arts follows on from the Bronze award that MIC achieved in 2020 for its College-wide efforts.
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) programme at Mary Immaculate College (MIC) celebrates its 30th anniversary this academic year. To mark the milestone, the Faculty of Arts is holding a series of free talks open to the wider public to showcase the academic excellence and varied research interests of the Faculty. The Faculty of Arts 30th Anniversary Lecture Series takes place from January to March 2023 and covers fascinating topics including history, literature, Irish, poetry, European studies and psychology. All talks are completely free and are open to everyone.
Mary Immaculate College’s (MIC) Faculty of Arts is delighted to announce the launch of two new leading undergraduate degrees. The BA in English Language and Literature (MI009), the only programme of its kind currently offered in Ireland, and the BA in Drama and English (MI010), the only programme of its type offered in Munster, are both four-year, full-time, honours degree (Level 8) programmes. These innovative degrees are an exciting addition to MIC’s Faculty of Arts provision, which includes an established Bachelor of Arts (MI002) and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (MI003).
MIC lecturer, Dr Sabine Egger, is a member of a working group organising a number of landmark annual events to highlight the importance of Modern Languages as a discipline in Ireland—the third of which will be jointly hosted by MIC and UL in Limerick in 2025.
A biannual festival celebrating the contemporary and historical experiences and achievements of women will return to Mary Immaculate College (MIC) from 5-7 March with a vibrant programme of cultural events including literature, performance, visual art and more across both the MIC Limerick and Thurles campuses.

Mary Immaculate College (MIC) is delighted to collaborate with the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in offering a Continuing Professional Development course on the teaching of Gaelic games in multiple sites throughout the country this July.
The MIC GPA Scholarship Scheme is open to GPA members only who have applied for and are successful in securing a place on MIC’s postgraduate programmes in education and the liberal arts. Two scholarships will be offered on an annual basis with at least one being awarded to a female player. MIC will contribute 50% of the programme fee to a maximum of €2,500 with the GPA contributing the remaining 50% of the programme fee to a maximum of €2500. If the programme fee is higher than €5,000 then the successful applicant will be liable for any shortfall that may exist. The successful MIC GPA Scholars will play an active role on MIC’s football, camogie or hurling teams and will act as ambassadors for their sport within the College community.
Congratulations to MIC graduate Áine Fitzgerald who has been appointed as the Editor of the Limerick Leader newspaper.
Áine, who graduated from MIC’s BA in Liberal Arts with Media in Irish in 2005, is the first ever female Editor in the paper’s 133-year history.
