What Can I Study?
Every year, Mary Immaculate College (MIC) welcomes students from a range of international locations to study at the College on study abroad and exchange programmes. MIC has formal partnerships with numerous colleges and universities in Europe and around the world to facilitate exchanges but otherwise, with the agreement of your home institution, students may study at MIC by paying the requisite tuition fees.
It is recommended that international study abroad and exchange students take a minimum of four course modules (24 ECTS) per semester of study at Mary Immaculate College.
*International Students opting to take modules from Early Childhood Care & Education list may only do so if there is a formal link with their home institution.
Students can also choose from the following subjects:
Beginners Irish Language (Gaeilge ab initio) Course (6 ECTS Credits)
Gaeilge ab Initio is an Irish language course for beginners, concentrating on the spoken language. The emphasis is on the basic communication skills and grammar of the language, allowing the students to converse in Irish on matters concerning themselves and their interests. Course content includes: background and history of the Irish Language; Irish language today; Irish mythology; introduction to Irish place-names and Gaeltachtaí (Irish-speaking areas).
English as a Foreign Language (6 ECTS Credits) / English for Academic Purposes (6 ECTS Credits)
Courses in English language are offered in both the Autumn and Spring semesters. These modules are designed to meet the language needs of intermediate to advanced non-native speakers of English studying at university level. Students are assigned to the appropriate module based on their language proficiency. Language needs analysis is conducted to tailor course content to respond to students’ requirements. Each course is worth 6 ECTS.
How do I Apply?
Study Abroad / Exchange / Erasmus+
Mary Immaculate College welcomes applications from students from other universities interested in studying with us for one semester or one academic year.
With the agreement of their home institution, students can pay the required tuition fees, or if there is an MIC student to send to the home institution in exchange, fees will not be applicable.
Students coming under the Erasmus+ exchange programme are not liable for tuition fees.
Application and Registration
For students wishing to study at MIC in Autumn 2024, you must be nominated by your university Study Abroad Coordinator by 15 March 2024.
For students wishing to study at MIC in Spring 2025, you must be nominated by your university Study Abroad Coordinator by 15 September 2024.
Once you are nominated you must complete the Application Form which will be provided to you via email by Dr Sandra Aline Wagner (Sandra.Wagner@mic.ul.ie).
Closing dates for receipt of applications
- 15 April 2024 for international exchange students arriving in Autumn 2024
- 15 October 2024 for international exchange students arriving in Spring 2025
Please note that due to accommodation shortages nationwide, it may be necessary to close applications earlier this academic year to ensure that students are not nominated without a place to stay. Therefore, the sooner nominations are received, the better.
International orientation and registration take place at MIC the week before the semester commences.
Costs
Study Abroad
If your home institution has no formal links to Mary Immaculate College, you may study at MIC if your home institution agrees that you can apply. Unless an MIC student travels to your home institution in your place, you must pay tuition and other fees.
Visa and travel costs vary.
It is estimated that a budget of approximately €300 per week covers accommodation, meals and other living costs. Individual budgets vary depending on the cost of accommodation and level of personal expenditure.
Exchange
If your home institution has a partnership with Mary Immaculate College, you may be able to study at MIC without paying for tuition.

- High school graduation diploma with GPA of 3.0 or above that includes English, another language and mathematics
- SAT score in the range of 1090 to 1600 (new 3-component SAT) or a minimum ACT score of 22
- Particular programmes at MIC require applicants to have passed Advance Placement tests or Sat II tests in specific subjects
IELTS
The British Council/University of Cambridge Local Syndicate’s test of Academic English, ‘International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with
A composite score in the range of 6.5-7 and not less than 6 in any one component for entry to degree programmes.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may complete the IELTS test online.
Duolingo
MIC has approved the use of the Duolingo English Test (DET) as a temporary measure for the 2020/1 intake (due to test centre closures). The minimum requirement will be a DET score of 110. An interview may be required in conjunction with this for certain programmes.
TOEFL
A minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer-based) in the TOEFL test.
University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations
One of the following other University of Cambridge ESOL exams;
- Grade C or higher on a Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
- Grade A on a Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
Pearson Test of English (Academic)
The minimum requirement is an overall score of 63 with no section less than 59. This recommendation is equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.5 with no section less than 6.0
Other evidence of proficiency in English may be accepted; advice may be obtained from the International Office.
If you are participating in an exchange programme, and your home university has an exchange agreement with MIC, your fees may be reduced. To check if your university has an agreement with MIC, check with your International Office.
Not including fees, the costs of living here (including rent, utilities, food and socialising) are estimated to be approximately €150-200 per week. This will vary depending on what student accommodation you choose, and whether you wish to travel around Ireland or Europe during your stay.
For full degree students, once you have applied and have been accepted, you will be given an MIC student ID number. This is the number you will use to enrol online. You will receive further instructions on how to enrol online via email.
For Study Abroad students, you will complete your enrolment during orientation. To register for your modules, you will receive an online form during Orientation.
Registration must be completed in the first two weeks of term. There is a fee for late registration.
