New Library Timeline

Work is underway to construct a new Library/Learning Resource Centre for Mary Immaculate College. A modern structure of approx. 5,000 square metres will be developed at the heart of the Limerick campus over a three-year project time span.

2015

The Beginning

Minister Harris and Prof Eugene Wall at the entrance to the MIC library Minister for Further and Higher Education, Simon Harris visited the existing library building in 2022.

The Library Feasibility Assessment (BDP) Report is published, recommending the design and construction of a new 5,000 sq m library at MIC Limerick.

  • Climate Impact and Sustainability Study is prepared by Varmings
  • Programme & Construction Cost Review is prepared by MKO Planning & Environmental Consultants

The HEA confirms a grant contribution of €30.877m toward the project under a Devolved Control Procedure process.

Planning

Two firms leading the architecture, design and project and cost management elements of the development outside MIC library with MIC senior management Scott Tallon Walker Architects and AECOM Ireland Ltd. appointed to work on the new 5,000 square metre Library/Learning Centre at MIC.

Planning permission to build a new Library/Learning Resource Centre is granted by Limerick City and County Council.

July 2024

Grant of Planning Permission is upheld by An Bord Pleanála following objections 

Architect Lead Design Team appointed, under Scott Tallon Walker Architects.

Project Controls Team appointed, under AECOM.

An tÚdaras Rialaithe approve the Library Project to proceed, and the use of College reserves to cover estimated project costs in excess of agreed exchequer funding.

February / April 2025

Further consultations with stakeholders take place including local community

Fire Safety cert and Disability Access certificate lodged.

Public Contract Notice published.

  • Value Engineering (VE) exercise to identify a range of potential project savings is completed with savings of €1.065m identified for action
  • Final interior design layout and furnishings are finalised with the MIC Library team
  • Total project cost updated and revised to a projected €46.2m
  • Project site enabling works are carried out by PBC Builders Ltd
  • Pre-Qualification report prepared
