Mary Immaculate College (MIC) celebrated Africa Day 2025 on 29 May with a free event commemorating the founding of the African Union and celebrating the cultures and contributions of African communities worldwide.
Building on the success of previous years, the 2025 Africa Day at MIC featured a diverse programme aimed at fostering cultural exchange and highlighting the experiences of African students and communities in Ireland. The event was organised in collaboration with MIC's International Office and the Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Interculturalism (EDII) Office and this year’s theme was Scholarship Equity.
Highlights from the day included opening remarks from Councillor Tommy Hartigan, on behalf the office of the Mayor of Limerick City and County; a keynote speech from Dr Lilian Nwanze-Akobo of Maynooth University and a spoken word performance from Limerick-based rapper and producer, MuRli. A selection of cultural performances throughout the day reflected the creativity of African traditions, while guests had the opportunity to sample traditional dishes from Ghana and Nigeria, prepared by local chefs and community members.
Ahead of the event, Dr Lylian Fotabong, EDII Race and Equality and Sanctuary Manager at MIC, said:
“Africa Day is a celebration of culture, identity, and unity. At MIC, it’s an opportunity for our community to come together, learn from one another, and recognise the vibrancy and diversity that African students bring to our campus. This event is about fostering understanding, pride, and connection across cultures, and I'm delighted to see it again at MIC this year. This fourth year is a powerful research, learning, cultural exchange, and community-building platform. It highlights Africa's incredible heritage and promising future in research. We will explore, share and celebrate. I hope the connections we will forge and the knowledge we gain will inspire us to continue fostering understanding and unity, not just today, but every day within our college and beyond."
