Making the Most of the CAO Change of Mind: Essential Tips for Applicants from MIC

Making the Most of the CAO Change of Mind: Essential Tips for Applicants from MIC

As school leavers across Ireland prepare for the next step in their education, the CAO Change of Mind facility is a crucial opportunity to refine programme choices. Applicants can adjust, add, or remove programme selections as many times as they wish, at no cost, until 5pm on 1st July.

Here are some essential tips to make the most of this final decision window.

Key Tips for Smart Decision-Making

  • Research, Research, Research: Take the time to revisit programme details, speak to current students, review college prospectuses and websites, and explore career pathways to make an informed decision. The Course Finder on the CAO website, which lists all programmes at third-level institutions in the Republic of Ireland, can be searched by institution or by programme key words, and the Leaving Certificate Points Calculator allows you to calculate your points score by selecting the exam year and entering your results by level and grade. There is also an especially useful Have a question facility on the CAO website, along with information for parents/guardians and useful links to everything from Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI), the Institute of Guidance Counsellors and much more.

  • Think Beyond Points: While CAO points are important, don’t let them be the sole factor in your choices. Consider your interests, strengths, and long-term career ambitions before making a change.

  • Explore Alternative Pathways: Didn’t get the points for your first choice? No worries! Look into alternative routes such as QQI courses that can lead to the same destination.

  • Consider Location & Costs: College life is more than just academics. Consider travel, accommodation, and cost implications when selecting programmes—finding the right fit can greatly enhance the overall experience.

  • Use Your Final Chance Wisely: The Change of Mind period is open until 1st July at 5:00pm so double-check your selections and ensure they truly reflect your aspirations before making your final submission.
