MIC students crowned ‘Radio DJs of the Year’ at Student Media awards

Two Mary Immaculate College (MIC) students have been crowned Ireland’s ‘Radio DJs of the Year’ at the Student Media awards. Daragh Dolan and Jake O’Loughlin were announced as the winners of the prestigious title at the SMedia Awards at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Thursday.

The annual awards recognise the best in student media across broadcast, digital and print media and were this year presented by Irish broadcaster and former Love Island host, Laura Whitmore.

Daragh and Jake won the award for their show All in One, which is aired on Wired 99.9FM, Limerick’s fully licensed college radio station that has studios o MIC Limerick’s campus, and TUS, Moylish, campus.  

Daragh, from Clarecastle in Clare, is a fourth-year Bachelor of Arts student studying Media & Communications Studies and History. Daragh has been a volunteer with Wired FM since his first year at MIC and worked as a Studio Executive at the station during his third-year work placement. He is also a broadcast journalist with Clare FM. Jake, from Ennis in Clare, is a fourth-year Bachelor of Education student and has been presenting All in One with Daragh since 2021, in addition to presenting an Irish language chart-show on the station.

Congratulating the presenters on their award was Wired 99.9FM Manager Ray Burke, who said: “This is a remarkable, but very well-deserved achievement for Daragh and Jake. They put a serious amount of work into their show each week. and we’re all both delighted and proud of them. They are great ambassadors for college radio and their show, All in One, is jam packed with diverse features every week, not to mention the eclectic mix of music to boot. I also want to congratulate the other Wired 99.9FM volunteers who were nominated for Student Media Awards, including Sarah and Cian - also MIC students.”

Sarah Ryan-Purcell and Cian Mac Coistela, are Bachelor of Education students, and were nominated in the Raidió trí Ghaeilge category for their show Nóisín, which is an Irish langauge talk-show on student affairs.
