On Thursday 17 October and Friday 18 October, Mary Immaculate College (MIC) will open its doors to welcome thousands of post-primary school students, guidance counsellors and parents to the MIC Open Days. The two-day event is a showcase of the wide range of programmes, extra-curricular activities and exceptional facilities that the College has to offer.

With talks, tours and information stands, the MIC Open Days provide the perfect opportunity for prospective students to meet with lecturers and support staff; mingle with current students and learn about the 12 undergraduate degree programmes on offer at MIC Limerick and MIC Thurles.

Two new programmes have been added to the MIC offering for prospective students, namely the Bachelor of Education – International at MIC Limerick and the Bachelor in Education, Mathematics and Business Studies at MIC Thurles.

The Bachelor of Education – International (MI004) is a four-year, full-time, honours degree (Level 8) designed to qualify students to teach in primary schools with the addition of an international study component. The Bachelor in Education, Mathematics and Business Studies (post-primary) (MI014) is a four-year, full-time, undergraduate concurrent teacher education degree (Level 8) in which graduates are qualified to teach Mathematics and Business Studies to honours Leaving Certificate level.

Two elite sports scholarships in honour of former MIC staff members and sporting stalwarts Noreen Lynch and Leonard Enright were recently announced by the College. The scholarships, valued at €4,000 each, are reserved for outstanding performance athletes who are committed to further developing their sporting and academic careers. These elite scholarships are open to incoming applicants and current undergraduate and postgraduate students across both the Limerick and Thurles campuses.

A new CAO Points Concession Scheme has also been introduced at MIC. Under this new scheme, up to 10 places across all undergraduate programmes will be reserved for those who have demonstrated a high level of sporting performance. Successful applicants who meet all the necessary requirements may be eligible for a points reduction of up to 40 points below the First Round CAO points cut-off for the programme they have applied for.

John-Patrick Walsh from Ballina in Co. Mayo, attended the Open Day in October 2018 and is now a First Year BA student at MIC.

“What I found most interesting about the Open Day was when I came down [to MIC Limerick], I didn’t know anything about the College or the programmes for that matter. We got a tour of the whole College and got to see all the buildings and what was going on around campus. Then, we went to the Lime Tree Theatre to hear talks about all the programmes offered here. The talks were great. Lecturers explained about all the different parts of the programmes and afterwards, you could speak to individual lecturers to ask any questions you have. Going to the Open Day really made me interested in coming to study here at Mary Immaculate College.”

Fellow First Year BA student, Eimear Collins from Skibbereen in Co. Cork added: “I would recommend going to Open Days because you get a feel for the place and see the campus, which is better than just reading about it. There is a schedule of talks about programmes but I thought the information stands were good because you were able to go to the relevant lecturers and offices to talk about specific things.”

Throughout the two days, around 4,000 post-primary school students from across the Mid-West region and further afield will get to explore the MIC Limerick campus, experience the high calibre of education on offer and get a taste of what college life is all about—getting all the essential information they need to make an informed decision when the CAO application process opens on 5 November.
