Borrow, Renew, Return

  • All students can borrow in both MIC Limerick and MIC Thurles.
  • Periodicals, Theses and Reference books (blue dots on spine) cannot be borrowed.
  • There is also a reciprocal borrowing arrangement with UL Library.

In order to borrow from the library you need a valid college ID card.

Use the Library Catalogue to see if the item is available in the library.

Note the shelfmark and then go to the shelves to locate the book.

When you find the book you are looking for, use the self-service machines on the ground floor to take the item out on loan, or go to the staff at the Service Desk.

If you have any problems, ask the staff at the Service Desks for help.

You must maintain your Library Account, called My Account, in good stead in order to use the self-issue machines and borrow. You cannot borrow if:

  • You have exceeded your borowing allowance.
  • You have overdue items.
  • Your outstanding fines exceed €5.00.

If you are not allowed to renew it will be for one or more of the following reasons:

  • The loan has already been renewed
  • The item is for 1 Day 3 Day or 4 Hour loan

Where possible return your books at the self-service machines or at the Service Desk at the Campus you borrowed from.

If it is out of hours, use the book returns boxes on either the Limerick or Thurles Campus, further details are available here.

Please remember to return or renew your items to avoid paying fines. Information on due dates, etc. is available from the Library My Account page (you will need your ID Number and Library PIN to access this). If your library items are overdue, you will get an email alerting you to this a couple of days after the due date.

How do you pay a fine?

At the moment, it is only possible to pay fines in cash or by cheque or postal order, in person or by post, at the Service Desks on both Campuses. For further details on paying by cheque/postal order, please contact 061-204370 (Limerick Campus) or 0504-20531 (Thurles Campus).

If an item is out on loan and there are no copies left on the shelf, you can reserve a copy to ensure that the book will be held for you when it is returned.

How to place a Reservation

  • Search for the book on the Library Catalogue.
  • On the catalogue record click on "Check Availability".

  • It is your responsibility to check your email regularly.
  • You can also check the status of your reservations online by clicking on the My Account feature at top right-hand side of screen on the Library Catalogue page. You will need your ID number and Library PIN to access it.
