AI Misconduct Case Scenarios

Please see the five AI misconduct scenarios below. Flip each card to see what violation occurred for each case and why it is considered a violation.

Scenario One

Tom has been asked to put together a maths lesson plan for a class of 5th year primary students, but Tom has two essays due this week, and he doesn't feel he has time to complete all three assessments. Tom decides to ask Generative AI to produce the lesson plan for him and then submits the lesson plan as his own.

Violation: Plagiarism

All writing, ideas or works quoted or paraphrased in an academic assignment in MIC must be attributed and acknowledged to the original source through proper citation. 

Scenario Two

Susan has sat down to write her English paper on Hamlet. The learning objective for the paper is to show critical thinking and demonstrate argumentation. Susan has ideas but is struggling to get anything committed to paper. She is not confident that her ideas are strong enough, so she asks ChatGPT to come up with her thesis and four key arguments that she can make. She uses ChatGPT's ideas and arguments and presents them as her own without citation.

Violation: Plagiarism

Scenario Three

Ben and Aoife are working on a PowerPoint presentation on Rock metamorphosis for their Geography class. They ask ChatGPT to summarise rock metamorphosis and then ask it to create a visually appealing diagram. They include the diagram and the brief summary in their PowerPoint slide, but they don’t reference ChatGPT or use quotation marks around the quoted content

Violation: Plagiarism

Scenario Four

From Cathal's documentary module he has been asked to create a 10-minute expository documentary on a topic of his choosing. Students will be assessed on how well the documentary is constructed and their incorporation of the key principles associated with expository documentaries. Cathal takes his time collecting all his footage, but when it comes to time to edit the video together, he runs out of time. To make up for lost time, Cathal ops to use a Generative AI, which edits the video together for him. He submits the documentary as his own and does not disclose his use of Generative AI.

Violation: Academic Dishonesty

Scenario Five

Niamh has to complete an online vocabulary test for her Irish Language module where she must pair the Irish word with the correct definition. Niamh understands the importance of Irish to her degree programme and is feeling a lot of pressure to succeed. She is usually very diligent about studying, but she hasn't had a good run up to her test. Her grandmother passed away and she hasn't been feeling much like herself. With the test now in front of her, she is convinced she will fail and is regretting not speaking to her lecturer about her current difficulties. In a moment of stress, Niamh copies the questions into ChatGPT and has it give her the answers. She uses these answers to complete her test.

Violation: Academic Dishonesty
