Mary Immaculate College (MIC) has announced the launch of its new Bachelor of Science in Climate, Society, Sustainability (MI011), an innovative Level 8 honours degree that will equip students with the knowledge and skills to understand and address one of the defining challenges of our time.
The four-year programme, one of the first of its kind currently offered in Munster, is the latest addition to MIC's growing suite of undergraduate programmes within its Faculty of Arts, joining the established Bachelor of Arts (MI002), Bachelor of Science in Psychology (MI003) and BA in Drama & English (MI010)
Combining environmental and social science perspectives, the programme explores the complex relationship between climate change, society and sustainability. Drawing on the discipline of Geography, and other science and arts disciplines, students will examine the environmental, cultural, political and economic dimensions of sustainability, gaining a deeper understanding of how societies can respond to global challenges while creating more sustainable futures.
Graduates will develop a broad range of highly transferable skills, including critical thinking, problem solving, data analysis, research and communication, preparing them for careers across sustainability, environmental planning, climate policy, community development, research, education and the public sector.
Commenting on the launch, Professor Paul Aplin, Head of the Department of Geography, MIC, said:
"Climate change is one of the most significant challenges facing our world, creating an urgent need for graduates who can understand both environmental systems and the social realities that shape responses to them. MIC's new BSc in Climate, Society, Sustainability offers a distinctive blend of environmental and social science, enabling students to explore real-world sustainability challenges from multiple perspectives.
Through a combination of fieldwork, research, data analysis and critical engagement with contemporary issues, students will develop the knowledge, skills and adaptability needed to make a meaningful contribution to a more sustainable future. The programme provides a unique opportunity for students who are passionate about creating positive change for both people and the planet."
A defining feature of the degree is its strong emphasis on experiential learning. Fieldwork is embedded throughout the programme, with students taking part in residential courses and international expeditions to destinations such as Malta and Tenerife, bringing classroom learning to life through hands-on investigation and research.
In third year, students will have the opportunity to broaden their academic and professional horizons through a semester or full year abroad at one of MIC's international partner universities or through professional work placement opportunities, allowing them to gain valuable real-world experience while developing global perspectives.
As sustainability continues to shape policy, industry and society, the demand for graduates with interdisciplinary expertise is increasing rapidly. MIC's new BSc in Climate, Society, Sustainability responds directly to that need, preparing graduates to contribute innovative solutions to local and global sustainability challenges.
