The first edition of MIC News, a new publication showcasing the work of last year’s second-year Media and Communication Studies students at Mary Immaculate College (MIC), was officially launched on Wednesday, 9 September.
The 28-page publication is the culmination of work students completed as part of their journalism module. Each student researched and developed a story related to MIC or Limerick city, and for many, it was their first experience producing journalism.
The articles cover a wide range of topics of interest to the students and wider community, including the cost of living for students, campus supports and crime prevention in the city, alongside features exploring local and campus culture and sport.
MIC News is the first publication of its kind produced by the Department of Media and Communication Studies and is available digitally, with a limited print run also produced.
Dr Rosemary Day, Head of the Department of Media and Communication Studies, said:
“The future of journalism in Ireland is looking bright, with these students showing that good stories are worth telling. The second-year class of 2025–2026 has produced excellent copy in this special issue. We wish them well as they study abroad and undertake work placements in media outlets nationally over the next year, and we look forward to following their careers on graduation.”
Dr Ciarán Ryan, Lecturer in Media and Communication Studies, said:
“We are delighted that Professor Dermot Nestor launched the first edition of MIC News. The publication is the culmination of twelve weeks of hard work from our second-year students last semester. This is their first foray into journalism and, hopefully, some of these students are the names we see in local, national and international media in the future. We plan to make this publication an annual fixture in the College calendar.”
