ICAIRE Welcomes Dr Jasper Roe as New Research Group Member
Dr Jasper Roe The Irish Centre for AI Research in Education (ICAIRE) has welcomed Dr Jasper Roe as a new member to its research group, strengthening its growing network of scholars working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, education, assessment, and digital learning.
Dr Roe is Assistant Professor in Digital Literacies and Pedagogies at Durham University. His research focuses on educational technology, artificial intelligence, academic integrity, and the ways in which emerging technologies are reshaping teaching, learning, and assessment.
His work brings together practical questions facing educators with broader debates about ethics, policy, critical AI literacy, and the responsible use of generative AI in education. His involvement in ICAIRE adds significant international expertise to the research group at a time when schools, colleges, and universities are grappling with how best to respond to rapid developments in AI.
Dr Roe is also a co-author of the Artificial Intelligence Assessment Scale (AIAS), alongside Mike Perkins, Leon Furze, and Jason MacVaugh. The AIAS was developed as a practical framework to help educators make clear decisions about the appropriate use of generative AI in assessment.
Rather than treating AI use as a simple question of permission or prohibition, the scale supports more nuanced assessment design by setting out different levels of AI engagement, from no AI use through to full AI integration where appropriate.
The AIAS has become an influential international resource and is now used in more than 350 institutions worldwide. Its adoption reflects the growing need for transparent, consistent, and pedagogically sound approaches to assessment in the age of generative AI.
