ICAIRE Joins AI in Schools External Advisory Taskforce
AI in Schools External Advisory Taskforce. The Irish Centre for AI Research in Education (ICAIRE) is pleased to be represented on the newly established AI in Schools External Advisory Taskforce, with Dr Patrick Buckland attending the first meeting on 14 May 2026.
The taskforce, established by the Department of Education and Youth to consider the implications of artificial intelligence for teaching, learning, and assessment across the school system, will provide a structured forum for engagement with key education stakeholders, relevant agencies, and experts as Ireland continues to develop policy, guidance, and supports in this rapidly evolving area.
ICAIRE’s involvement reflects the centre’s ongoing commitment to responsible, evidence-informed, and ethical approaches to artificial intelligence in education. The centre brings together expertise in AI, pedagogy, assessment, digital learning, and educational research to support meaningful dialogue around the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies.
The initial work of the taskforce will focus on assessment, including summative and state-certified assessment, while also progressing discussions on teaching, learning, and formative assessment. These areas are central to current debates about how schools can respond to AI in ways that support teachers, strengthen learner confidence, and safeguard the integrity of education.
Dr Buckland’s participation in the first meeting marks an important opportunity for ICAIRE to contribute to national conversations on AI in schools and to support the development of practical, thoughtful, and future-focused guidance for educators and learners.
