Information for Parents

The Parents’ Section of the Mary Immaculate College website is designed to inform you, as a parent or guardian of an MIC student, about college life and to help you support and guide the student through their college experience.

The College Journey

Each year MIC welcomes over 1,000 new first year students. However, the college journey, while exciting for most students, can be daunting for some. Whether it is advising them on their CAO choices, attending our parents’ orientation evening or giving financial management or health and well-being advice your counsel will be important.

The entire MIC website is an invaluable resource on all aspects of college life. You can begin by exploring Student Information to find out about everything from Student Supports and Peer Mentoring to Scholarships and Accommodation options, to Fees, Charges and Grants.

The MIC Staff Perspective

The move from post-primary to higher education is a major step for students and parents. Parents play a key role in offering support while encouraging independence. For many students, especially those living away from home for the first time, adapting to daily responsibilities can be a challenge. Even those living at home must adjust to greater independence and self-management.

At MIC, we offer a range of supports to help first-year students navigate this transition. The Students' Union also plays a vital role in student life, offering guidance and support.

Parents can help by listening, offering encouragement during tough times, and celebrating milestones. At MIC, we are committed to providing academic and personal support that equips students for life and work in the 21st century.

The MIC Student Perspective

Starting college after the Leaving Certificate can feel overwhelming, but it's important to remember that everyone feels the same mix of nerves and excitement. MIC offers incredible opportunities to learn, grow, and make lifelong friends.

In all of this, we often forget those who’ve supported us the most—our parents, guardians, and families. They remain our greatest cheerleaders through every success and setback.

To families: college is a time for students to grow and become independent. Support them when needed but also give them space to find their own path. No matter how far they go, they’ll always remember the people who helped them get there.
