A cumulative QCA of 2.00 with no deficient grades (i.e. 'F', 'NG', 'I') is the minimum standard for progression to the next year of your course.

All grades taken in the annual repeats will be capped at C3. The higher of the original or the repeat grade will be awarded in all cases. In cases where students received an I-Grade during semester examinations, these I-Grade modules are not capped at the annual repeats.

Students who do not attain the minimum QCA at the end of the year will on the recommendation of the relevant examination board:

  1. Repeat the year, or
  2. Repeat a full semester, or
  3. Repeat a maximum of two modules in any one semester on a link-in basis. In such an instance, grades are uncapped, or

    Summer Resit Timeline
    Summer Resit Timeline

    If you fail modules in the Summer Resits, you will be required to take these deficient modules on a Link-in repeat basis the following academic year.  Modules repeated in this way are uncapped.  You may link-in to a maximum of 2 modules per semester and will be liable for all associated fees. Please note that you will not progress to the next year of study of your programme while linking in to modules. You are required to attend lectures/tutorials etc. for these deficient modules with the next cohort of students and examinations are taken for these modules only, at the end of that semester.  If you wish to avail of this option, complete the relevant Link-in form and return to Student Status (studentstatus@mic.ul.ie).

    Link-in forms are available on the MIC Website on the Student Portal at the following link: https://maryimmaculatecollege.sharepoint.com/sites/studentportal/saa/student%20forms/forms/allitems.aspx

    Alternatively, in an effort to improve your QCA, you may prefer to Link-in to the next Academic Year, rather than take the Annual Resit Assessments.  Please note that modules repeated in this way are uncapped.   You may Link-in to 2 modules per semester at a cost of €570 per module.    Should you fail your Link-in module(s) at the end of the semester and are required to take Summer Resit Examinations, you will then be capped at a grade of C3 at this point.

    If you are required to repeat an entire semester or opt to avail of this opportunity in an effort to improve your QCA, you must register in week one of the Semester in which you are required to repeat.   You will be subject to payment of full fees in respect of the semester.  Please inform Student Status (studentstatus@mic.ul.ie) in writing if you intend availing of this option.

    If you are required to repeat the year, please note that you must register in Week 1 of the Autumn Semester of the next academic year.  You will be subject to payment of full fees. Please inform Student Status (studentstatus@mic.ul.ie) in writing if you intend availing of this option.

    In order to be eligible to undertake a Summer Resit Assessment, your Residual QCA must be at least 2.00. This means that it must be possible for you to improve you QCA to at least 2.00 by taking a maximum of 4 modules and replacing them with the highest grade attainable in the Annual Resits, namely C3. If your Residual QCA does not reach 2.00, you are then not eligible to take Summer Resit Examinations and it is necessary for you to consider other options, i.e. Link-in, Repeat Semester or Repeat Year. You can check you Residual QCA on the attached Action Report. Please also note the following:

    • A maximum of 4 modules can be repeated provided you have completed two academic semesters in the year.
    • Students who complete only one academic semester in a year may only resit 2 modules from that semester.
    • I-Grades will not be counted in the maximum permissible number of modules which a student is allowed to resit.
    • If you register for summer resit assessments and subsequently decide to link-in to the following academic year instead of undertaking the resit assessments, you must notify Student Academic Administration and Student Status of your decision, by emailing saa@mic.ul.ie and studentstatus@mic.ul.ie.
    • Resit examinations (excluding I-Grade exams) will be capped at C3 grade.  The higher of the original or the repeat grade will be awarded in all cases.

    If your QCA is already over 2.00 with no deficient grades but you have some D1 and/or D2 grades, you are entitled to progress to the next year without repeating modules unless otherwise specified in the Programme Specific Regulations for your programme. However, you may opt to clear the D1 or D2 grades (i.e. to upgrade them to a Pass grade–capped at C3) by voluntarily sitting summer restis subject to the above criteria. If you receive a worse grade in the repeats, the original grade will remain.

    See Student Handbook for further details.

    As per section 1.4.16 of Academic Regulations (see below):

    Summer resits will be available in all modules in all years of all academic programmes except where Heads of Departments make a written submission to the Vice President - Academic Affairs not to offer a repeat in a module or part thereof in cases where:

    1. It would not be feasible to offer a repeat assessment;
    2. Specific required skills have not been demonstrated by the student;
    3. The module has been defined as having professional accreditation-related elements and, in accordance with section 3.5.1, repeat opportunities are restricted.

    As approved by the Academic Regulations Committee:

    • Modules where the assessment relies substantially on completion of practical work
    • Specialist placement, e.g. Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Teaching Practice; clinical placements
    • Cases where a conventional written examination is not considered a suitable assessment instrument
    • Projects undertaken by means of team-based work/project, where skills development is being assessed either progressively or continually over a semester
    • Where there is a safety implication in a laboratory or workshop
    • Calendar implications

    I-Grades

    What is an I Grade?

    An I-Grade is of benefit when you are not able to complete all the requirements for a module during the normal semester timelines and have submitted certifiable evidence of medical and/or psychological illness or immediate family crisis where the presence of the student is indispensable. ‘I’ grades shall not be assigned in response to a plea made in respect of pressure of work.

    Students must submit satisfactory evidence to support the request for an I-Grade and such certification is valid only when it comes via our professional services (Student Medical Centre, Counselling or Chaplaincy services) or adequate third-party evidence is submitted to those professional services for consideration.

    An I-Grade provides you with the opportunity to undertake the assessment(s)/ examination(s) again over the summer with no academic penalty. The requirements to clear an I-Grade are set at module level and as such will be available from your module coordinator.

    Applications for Autumn Semester I-Grades

    I-Grade application forms are available from the Student Academic Administration Office or can be downloaded here or from the Student Portal/LAN.
