Research interests

IAn sainspéis taighde is mó atá ag T.J. is ea díriú ar an oideolaíocht atá ag teastáil chun teagasc na teanga agus an ábhair a chomhtháthú go rathúil, go háirithe i gcomhthéacsanna tumoideachais. Tá spéis ar leith aige i bhfeasacht teanga an mhúinteora, i mbonn eolais an mhúinteora agus i bhforbairt féiniúlachta an oideora tumoideachais.

An rud is mó a spreagann T.J. ná an fonn atá air an nuálaíocht a chur i bhfeidhm san oideachas tríd an gceannasaíocht theagascach. Tá suim mhór aige i ról an cheannaire theagascaigh maidir le féiniúlacht múinteoirí tumoideachais a chothú agus leas a bhaint as a gcuid eolais. Mar iar-phríomhoide scoile agus mar chomhordaitheoir leis an tSeirbhís um Fhorbairt Ghairmiúil do Mhúinteoirí, bhí baint aige le go leor tionscnaimh féinmheastóireachta scoile a chuir lena chuid tuisceana agus scileanna sa réimse seo.

Ó cuireadh tús leis an M. Oid. san Oideachas Lán-Ghaeilge i gColáiste Mhuire gan Smál in 2013, tá saineolas ar leith faighte ag T.J. maidir le teicneolaíochtaí digiteacha a chomhtháthú laistigh den teagasc agus den fhoghlaim chun go mbeidh an oideolaíocht agus an teicneolaíocht ag tacú lena chéile i ndearadh foghlama cumaisc. Déanann sé iniúchadh ar theicneolaíochtaí digiteacha atá an-nuálach agus casta chun cuir chuige oideolaíocha úrnua sa dearadh foghlama cumaisc a fhorbairt, le déanaí trí chleachtais Chomhchreat Tagartha na hEorpa um Theangacha (CTET)  a chomhtháthú san M. Oid. san Oideachas Lán-Ghaeilge agus Gaeltachta i gColáiste Mhuire gan Smál, ar clár foghlama cumaisc é.

 

T.J.'s main research interest focuses on the pedagogy required for the successful integration of language and content instruction, particularly in language immersion contexts. He is also interested in teacher language awareness, teacher knowledge and immersion teacher educator identity formation.

T.J. is driven by the impulse to innovate education through instructional leadership. The role of the instructional leader in cultivating immersion teacher identity and mobilising knowledge is a particular research interest of his. As a former school principal and a Coordinator with the Professional Development Service for Teachers, he has been involved in many school self-evaluation initiatives which have advanced his understandings and skillset in this area.

Since the inception of the M. Ed. in Irish-medium Education programme in MIC in 2013, T.J. has gained a particular expertise in the integration of digital technologies within teaching and learning to allow pedagogy and technology to support each other in a blended learning design. He continues to explore highly innovative and complex digital technologies to develop novel pedagogical approaches in blended learning design, more recently by the integration of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) practices in the blended learning M. Ed. in Irish-medium and Gaeltacht Education programme in MIC.
