 Postgraduate Awards & Assistantships

Mary Immaculate College (MIC) is increasingly aware of the importance of financial support structures for students undertaking postgraduate research at our college. To this end, MIC offers numerous forms of financial support to postgraduate researchers including a Doctoral Award (PhD in Arts or Education), an MIC Doctoral Studentship, an MIC Postgraduate Award, numerous departmental Assistantships, Presidents Scholarships and Special Awards.

Students pursuing research postgraduate degrees in Arts or Education are eligible to apply for MIC awards. These are available on a competitive basis and at the discretion of the College.

Typically, awards provide a subsistence bursary for the normal registration period of benefiting students, and in some cases also off-set tuition fees.
More information on MIC Awards and Assistantships and how to apply for same can be found on these pages.

One departmental assistantship per annum is available to each academic department at MIC. These can be offered to postgraduate students of the department who are prepared to participate in departmental activities (tutorial / seminar / laboratory / field work / course work marking etc.) for a maximum of 120 hours per academic year. The appropriate activity is determined by Department Heads / Course Leaders and Supervisors.

An Assistantship entitles the student to a fee waiver and a subsistence bursary for the work done in the Department.

The total value of the assistantship is €11,298, which consists of the stipend value of the assistantship (€6,900) plus a fee waiver of €4,398. Assistantships are potentially renewable for 3 years, with a full fee waiver for all holders of assistantships in Year 4 of their postgraduate studies.

The scheme is managed by the Research and Graduate School on behalf of MIC's Executive Team, including management of appointment contracts, annual renewal and discontinuation of DA awards

In addition, the Scheme provides an opportunity for a Head of Department to make a case for a Floating Departmental Assistantship (FDA). Two FDAs will be reserved for Departments allocated an FDA in the Academic Year 2017-18 and two will be reserved for Departments that did not receive an FDA in the Academic Year 2016-2017 and/or the Academic Year 2017-2018.
