The Department of Philosophy was founded at the College in 1974 to provide a subject programme in Philosophy for the newly established B.Ed. Degree for Primary Teaching.
The Department was closely associated with the Philosophy Department at U.C.C. while Mary Immaculate College was a Recognised College of the NUI. Our current programmes are validated by the University of Limerick, with which the College now has an agreement of academic linkage.
Today the Department of Philosophy continues to offer Philosophy in the B.Ed. and B.A. Degree programmes, as well as offering opportunities for post-graduate study in Philosophy (by research and thesis) leading to postgraduate degrees.
The Department also offers a taught MA in Philosophy and Literature, in conjunction with the Departments of English and Theology & Religious Studies.
