The Music Department services the academic music modules of the B.A. in Liberal Arts and the B.Ed in Primary Teaching to degree level, and the music education components of the B.Ed. degree and the Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary).
The undergraduate music programme covers the following areas: Music Theory and composition , Music History, Music Analysis, Irish Traditional and World Music, Popular Music, Performance, and Music Technology.
In 2003/2004 there were 47 students taking academic music in First Year (about 2/3rds proceed to degree level) and all First & Second Year B.Ed students take the mandatory music education components. The Department also supervises graduate students at M.A. and Ph.D level by research in Musicology and Music Education. An MA in Music Education began in October 2003.
The Music Department is staffed by six full-time and various part-time staff, has two purpose-built music lecture rooms, a music technology studio, a 1905 Hill organ, a "Couchet" harpsichord, a suite of practice rooms, and a comprehensive music and audio-visual library. Active societies include the Music Society, the Choral Society, Chapel Choir, College Music Ensemble, and various Traditional Groups.
The Limerick Baroque Players and The Limerick Wind Ensemble are resident in the Music Department. Due to the academic linkage with the University of Limerick, there are close reciprocal ties and cross-campus ventures with the Irish World Music Centre, iwmc@ul.ie , and the M.A. in Music Technology in the Department of Computer Science.
