MIC Text Alert Service

To all students enrolling at MIC for the first time or returning to continue their studies – Welcome!

MIC would like to tell you about an important service called the Text Alert Service.  This service is free to all students and will allow the College to send a text alert to students whose mobile phone numbers have been provided to the College.

In order for this service to work, the College must have access to all students’ current mobile phone numbers. If you want to know more and to ensure that the College has access to your mobile phone number to enable you to benefit from the Text Alert Service, please read the following information carefully:

How will the MIC Text Alert Service be used?

How will the MIC Text Alert Service be used?

It is intended that this Text Alert Service will allow MIC to make contact with students via text to a mobile phone, to provide them with important and relevant information regarding their academic affairs and College operations.

How do I ensure that the College has my mobile phone number?

When students enrol at MIC for the first time, their mobile phone number is collected along with other personal details and this information is recorded and maintained by the College on a secure data-base. The MIC Text Alert Service will use this data-base to identify the mobile phone numbers of all students for the purpose of providing important information by text message.

I am an International Exchange Student – am I included in the MIC Text Alert Service?

The MIC Placement Office advises all international students visiting the College to purchase mobile phones during their stay so that members of staff in the office have a direct means of contacting each student. In order to include international students in the MIC Text Alert Service, the Placement Office forwards their mobile phone numbers to the office responsible for operating the system. All international students should ensure that the Placement Office has access to such numbers.

What should I do if my mobile phone number has changed since I enrolled at MIC for the first time?

  • Undergraduate Students:

MIC provides undergraduate students with the means to update their personal contact details, including mobile phone number, at any time by logging onto the Online Student Records system. This is the system students use to complete their Online Registration during Week 1 of each Academic Year (to log onto this system the username and password provided to each student is required). During online registration, students should take the time to ensure that their personal details, including their mobile phone number, are recorded correctly and should amend these details if necessary. In the event that these details change during the course of the year, students may log on to this system at any other time (except during grading) to review or amend their personal information.

  • Postgraduate Students:

Personal information, including mobile phone numbers are collected from postgraduate students enrolling at MIC for the first time and these details are part of the same database described above and used for the MIC Text Alert Service. For returning postgraduate students who are required to register online in the same manner as described above, the same principle applies: such students should ensure that their details are correct and should amend them in the event of any change. In all other cases, such changes should be notified to the Postgraduate Office immediately.

How can I be certain the College has my mobile phone number for use in the MIC Text Alert Service?

The best way for students to ensure that the College has their mobile phone numbers is for each individual to check their details on the Online Student Records system (click here). Students are reminded that they are responsible for ensuring that information about them held by the College is accurate, up-to-date and complete (the College cannot be responsible for any incomplete information or changes unless previously informed).

However, if any student has a doubt or query regarding the MIC Text Alert Service they may seek further information by contacting  Ciara.NiShuilleabhain@mic.ul.ie

My mobile phone number is my personal information - how will the College manage and protect this information?

The College is bound by the provisions of the Data Protection Acts 1988 and 2003 and has policies in place to ensure compliance with this legislation. These policies are available on the College website at www.mic.ul.ie . The College provides an assurance to all individuals supplying personal information that such data will be stored securely, will not be passed on to third parties and will only be used to serve the purpose for which it is sought. Mobile phone numbers drawn from College records in order to operate the MIC Text Alert Service during Academic Year 2009-2010 will only be used to contact students and to provide vital information in the event of an emergency affecting the College.

How do I view my Online Student Record profile to check if my mobile phone number is recorded correctly?
