With the Mature Student Application Deadline Looming We Look at Why MIC Should Be Your Number One Choice

Here at Mary Immaculate College (MIC), Limerick, we happen to think that there are a number of reasons as to why you should consider MIC as your college of choice:

  • Designated  Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education
  • MIC’s commitment to Lifelong Learning
  • Alternative pathways in gaining access to third level education
  • Tailored support systems available to mature students
  • State-of-the-art city centre campus
  • Highly sought-after programmes
  • Friendly and relaxed atmosphere
  • Small class size
  • Top class sports facilities
  • Active and engaging Students’ Union
  • World class arts programme at the Lime Tree Theatre
  • Wired FM – student radio station

Don’t just take our word for it though – check out what our existing and past mature students have had to say about their experiences:

Robert Hartigan

Having deeply regretted not going to college first time around current MIC Masters’ student Robert Hartigan decided to ‘dip his toe in the water’ by undertaking the Foundation Certificate in MIC in 2007. On completion he decided to pursue his studies and took up a place on the BA Liberal Arts programme before proceeding to a Postgraduate course in History.

MIC is like a small community and the relaxed characteristics associated with such really help students make the transition from whatever station in life they are coming from.  Now that I have progressed to postgraduate studies within the College, I would definitely say that choosing to return to education, and in particular MIC, was one of the most positive and rewarding decisions I ever made.  My advice, take that plunge, for I think you will find that the water is neither too deep, nor too unpleasant!”

Eleanor McSherry

Eleanor McSherry is the perfect example of someone returning to education and fulfilling a long-held dream.  In 2003, when her children started school, Eleanor found herself at a loose end and harboured thoughts about going to college.  Speaking on her decision to return to college Eleanor said “I was nervous starting but I need not have been as the tutors were brilliant and full of encouragement and our lectures were small”. Eleanor not only received an honours degree in Media & Communication Studies and Philosophy but has since advanced to a research masters in Philosophy in MIC.

Anthony O’Connell

When the opportunity arose in 2004 for Anthony O’Connell to leave fulltime employment he decided the time had come for him to do something with his life other than the daily routine of work, wage and home.  Following his successful application to MIC Anthony embarked on a Liberal Arts Degree programme studying English and History and is currently undertaking a PhD History.  Speaking on his decision to return to college Anthony said “Becoming a mature student at Mary Immaculate College has probably been the greatest adventure of my life.  It has been life changing in so many ways, emotionally, physically and spiritually.  It is an experience I would recommend to anyone!”

Justin FitzGerald

Many mature students return to education for a whole variety of reasons.  Mine was that I was unhappy with my life at the time, and so I made a conscious decision to try and change this by realising a long held dream of going to a third level college.   I filled out a few forms and just took it from there.  I enrolled on the B.A. programme in MIC and graduated in 2008 with a good honours degree in History and Philosophy before starting a research masters in history, which I upgraded to a PhD. Some people go to extraordinary lengths for that life changing experience.  I simply applied to MIC.  If you dream of a better life and feel that education is the way to achieve this, than you need look no further than MIC.  What are you waiting for, just go for it!
