What is an institutional repository?

An institutional repository is a place to store digital copies of scholarly work and make these materials freely and easily accessible. It is designed to collect the work of a particular institution (usually a university or college), as opposed to a subject or department specific repository.

What is Open Access?

“By open access, we mean its immediate, free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full text of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software or use them for any other lawful purpose…”

Authors must read carefully any copyright agreements that they have signed if the works they are depositing have been previously published or is about to be published. Different publishers have different policies.  Copyright policies of publishers can be searched using the SHERPA/RoMEO service.


DOAJ – Directory of Open Access Journals -  Open Access journals are journals that use a funding model that does not charge readers or their institutions for access.

SPARC  Europe - SPARC Europe collaborates with the international SPARC organisation based in Washington D.C. It is an alliance of European research libraries, library organizations and research institutions working to bring about change in scholarly communication.
