Mary Immaculate College First to Launch Handbook for Student Parents
Nicola Hurley, MIC Student Parent Co-Ordinator, along with Mary I Students’ Union (MISU) recently launched the Student Parent Handbook, a guide for student/expectant parents to the supports which are available both within MIC and also from external agencies. MIC is the only Irish third-level college with a specifically dedicated advocate for expectant/student parents. In essence, the SPC provides a holistic 360-degree service to student/expectant parents.
It offers MIC student/expectant parents who have experienced a crisis pregnancy physical, emotional, social, educational and financial support during the academic year. The project is funded by the HSE Crisis Pregnancy Programme and MISU.
Speaking at the launch, Student Parent Co-Ordinator, Nicola Hurley, said, “The Student Parent Handbook is the culmination of all that has been learned from the experiences of the 198 students who have engaged with the Student Parent Co-Ordinator (SPC) project, since its initiation in October 2007. We hope that student/expectant parents at the College will find it a very helpful resource.” Nicola also acknowledged the contribution of the other members of the SPC team, namely Lorraine Whisker as independent researcher and Eva Devaney as co-facilitator of the student parent group initiative.
The Student Parent Handbook is now available to download from www.misu.ie.
