Exciting New Postgraduate Programme in Education and the Arts (META) Launched at MIC

The Department of Arts Education and Physical Education at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, is offering an exciting new postgraduate programme in education and the arts: META (MA in Education and The Arts).

META will be offered on a part-time basis over eighteen months and will commence in January 2012. It is designed for practising teachers (both primary and secondary) who have a particular interest and aptitude in the arts and education, artists who specialise in educational practice and policymakers or administrators in the arts in education.

META will have a collective arts approach. It is neither an integrated arts programme nor a programme in any specific discipline and will examine the issues, practices and theories that underpin music, visual arts, dance, drama and literature in education.

In part-one of the programme (Jan 2012-Sept 2012) a range of modules will be offered via two intensive weekends, weekday evening classes (over the 12-week spring semester period) and a week-long summer school at Mary Immaculate College. An on-line module will also be offered during the summer.

In part-two of the programme (Sept 2012-Aug 2013) a research module will be offered on weekday evenings (over the 12-week autumn semester period). The remainder of the programme will consist of research and the completion of a dissertation.

Entry Requirements Applicants will normally hold a 2.2 Honours degree (at level 8) with a major subject/component in one of the following areas: Education, Visual Arts, Music, Drama & Theatre Studies, Dance, Creative Writing.

Applicants who have a degree major in other disciplines may be considered if they have substantial and relevant professional experience of the arts and education greater than three years.

* Other applicants who have substantial and relevant prior experience and/or learning may be considered.

* * Acceptance under these categories will be subject to an interview. Portfolio evidence may also be required.

The META programme will cost €3,628 per year (including student service charges, etc.). Please note this this figure is subject to annual review.
