Mary I Students’ Union transformed into Santa’s Grotto
The Mary I Students’ Union (MISU) Lounge was once again transformed into Santa’s Grotto for its annual Student Parent Christmas party which took place on Friday 7th December.
The event, which is in its third year, was organised by MISU together with MISPACE, the student parent group initiative. 35 children along with their parents and grandparents took part in activities such as face painting, colouring and Zumba until Santa Claus dropped by for a special visit. Following their visit to Santa’s Grotto, the children were entertained by music from the Live Music Society as well as a magic show.
It was wonderful to meet so many children and to mark the end of the semester in a positive way, while also celebrating family at Christmas said Nicola Hurley, Student Parent Co-Ordinator. There was a significant increase in the number of children and their extended families who attended the party this year; this highlights the importance of on campus child friendly events.
Cillian McHugh, MISU Vice-President, noted it’s a great opportunity for the children to see where their parents study and for MISU and the Student Parent Co-Ordinator to meet the children of the student parents. He also highlighted the part played by the Students’ Union played in the event and the opportunity for members of the Executive Committee who are part of the B.Ed programme, along with volunteers from ECCE, to get involved. This year the party really helped to bring the Christmas Spirit to life on campus.
