Shannon Consortium Regional Award for Excellence in Higher Education Teaching

At the annual Shannon Consortium Regional Award for Excellence in Higher Education Teaching Awards ceremony at the University of Limerick last week, MIC faculty member Dr Marek McGann was honoured for his excellence in Teaching and Learning.  Dr McGann, a member of the Department of Psychology, was one of seven shortlisted for the award across the Shannon Consortium. The award showcases excellence in teaching and learning within the four Third Level institutes of the Shannon Consortium: the University of Limerick (UL), Mary Immaculate College (MIC), Limerick Institute of Technology, (LIT) and Institute of Technology Tralee, (ITT).

The overall winner of this year’s award was Dr Niall Seery, Design and Manufacturing Technology, UL. Others shortlisted were Dr. Michele O’Dwyer (UL), Dr. Audrey O’Grady (UL), Lisa Scott (LIT), Jennifer Stritch (LIT), Dr. Frank Houghton (LIT).

Speaking at the Award ceremony, UL President, Professor Don Barry, stressed the importance of the award, which was in its sixth year saying that it highlighted “the wealth of teaching talent” within the Consortium and this year the judges noted that the standard was exceptionally high and found it difficult to choose one winner. This year’s awards were adjudicated by an external panel comprised of Prof. Alan Mortiboys (Birmingham City University), Dr Ciara O’Farrell (TCD) and Prof. Steve Walsh (Newcastle University) and with Dr Sharon Walsh (NUIG) as chair.

Director of Teaching and Learning, Dr Anne O’Keeffe, noted that, “The Shannon Consortium Regional Award for Excellence is the most rigourous teaching and learning award process in the country. It involves a detailed and reflective teaching portfolio and a recording of the shortlisted candidate’s teaching”. She went on to say, “the Award is a celebration of excellence in teaching and learning and MIC is very proud to have Dr Marek McGann shortlisted this year for the award.”
