GAA Bursary Awards 2011/2012 Presented at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick

The future stars of young Irish sport were recognised this week at Mary Immaculate College (MIC) Limerick as the GAA Bursary Awards were presented to thirteen very talented students.

Robert Frost, Vice Chairman of Munster GAA, presented the six Munster GAA Bursaries valued at €1000 each. The successful recipients were Catriona Casey, Handball champion from Mallow; Orla Finn, Cork Senior footballer; Mairéad Ryan, camogie and football player from Limerick, Jamie Malone, footballer from Clare; Gemma Grace, camogie player from Tipperary and Donal Ryan from Cork who received a Coaching and Administrative Award.

On presenting the awards Mr. Frost said;

“It is an honour to pay tribute to these young, talented sporting stars.  The Munster GAA is delighted to be associated with Mary Immaculate College and these awards”.

 Professor Michael Hayes, President of Mary Immaculate College, presented the seven MIC Gaelic Games Bursaries, worth €500 each. These awards were presented to James Wall, hurler and footballer from Cork; Rosemary Rea, camogie player from Limerick; Emma Dunne, camogie player from Offaly; Rachel Kenneally, footballer from Tipperary; Katie Campbell, camogie player and footballer from Limerick; Sarah Harrington, footballer and camogie player from Cork and Deirdre Lawless, footballer from Galway.

Speaking at the awards ceremony Prof. Hayes said;

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to publicly say how very grateful we as a College community are to the Gaelic Athletic Association for the continued support you give to our sporting events.  We thank the Limerick County Board for their support of our ‘Continuing Training for Teachers’ summer courses, one of which is sponsored by Munster GAA and one by Limerick GAA. I want to express our appreciation to the GAA for providing financial support, year on year in the form of these bursaries which will be awarded shortly”.

Continuing he said

“We are here to pay tribute to the achievements of these young sports stars, which are quite remarkable and to note the outstanding contributions they have made to their particular fields. We are immensely proud to have such elite sports men and women among our students”.

Concluding he also paid thanks to Joe Redington, Gaelic Games Development Officer for Mary Immaculate College; Coaches Richard Bowles, Eamonn Cregan and Brian Begley; Ciara Cregan, MIC Sports Officer, Gearóid Power and all the team at Tailteann, MIC.

“I am glad that we have the opportunity this evening to acknowledge your hard work and commitment and the role that you all have played in the individual stories of our award recipients this evening” he said.

Mairéad Ryan, 3rd B.Ed., Camogie and Ladies Football

  • 2 Intermediate Munster camogie medals with county (2010/2010) & Minor B All-Ireland medal 2009
  • Senior B county medal 2011(camogie) & Junior county medal 2010 (football)
  • 3 Senior County medals with JTB School in ladies football (2007-2009)
  • South Limerick All Star camogie player 2009
  • Winner of Higher Education Div. 2 league with MIC in 2011/2012
  • Playing in Higher Education Div. 2 league Camogie Final with MIC in February 2012


Jamie Malone, 1st B.Ed., Gaelic Football
Corofin, Co. Clare

  • Represents club on intermediate team in both hurling & football
  • U21 county medal with club
  • U15 Munster hurling & U16 Munster football shield with county
  • Represented Clare in minor football
  • Winner of Higher Education Div. 2 Fresher’s Football league with MIC in 2011/2012


Donal Ryan, 2nd B.Ed., Administration and Coaching
Glenville, Cork

  • Statistician with Cork Senior Ladies Football Team 2008 to 2011
  • Assistant coach with MIC Ladies Football team
  • Cork County Junior football medal with club (1995)
  • Excellent Coach experience with clubs in both ladies football & camogie

Gemma Grace, 2nd B.Ed., Camogie
Burgess/Duharra, Tipperary

  • 2 Junior Munster medals with Tipperary
  • All Ireland & Munster Junior B medals with school St Marys Secondary School (Nenagh) in 2008
  • Senior County medal with club
  • Represented Tipperary in minor & intermediate teams 2010/2011
  • Playing in Higher Education Div. 2 league Camogie Final with MIC in February 2012
