Camogie Higher Education League Division 2 Final
Rathkeale on Monday 12/3/2012
Mary Immaculate College 5-08 University of Limerick (2) 2-01

Mary Immaculate College Camogie team secured a place in next year’s Division 1 league with an emphatic win over University of Limerick in the Division 2 final of the Higher Education League in Neville Park, Rathkeale on Monday night. In ideal playing conditions the college ladies showed drive and will-to-win to complement their Camogie skills. With the defence completely dominant over the U.L. forwards and with lightening fast forwards they were full value for their 16-point winning margin.

From the start Mary Immaculate College showed their mettle and within 3 minutes were a goal and a point to the good. Alice Fogarty opened the scoring with a point from a narrow angle and Niamh Mulcahy followed up with a goal from a free that dipped in under the crossbar. U.L. responded with a goal but this was to be their only score of the first half. Mary Immaculate College defence closed down almost every opportunity created by U.L. Goalkeeper Helen O Donnell showed great reflexes with a couple of brilliant saves, Laura was first to every ball, Gemma Grace acted as a magnet for the sliotar and her clearances set up some great attacks. The blocking and hooking of Niamh Power, Niamh Ni Chaoimh and Roisin McMahon displayed their steely resilience. Sarah Harrington and Mairead Ryan hounded down every surge by the U.L. midfield and half-forwards. A couple of frees by Naomi Carroll widened the gap to 3 points between the teams and then in the 18th minute Niamh Mulcahy repeated with a second goal from a free. Mary Immaculate College continued the pressure up to half-time but despite the drives forward by Katie Campbell, Emma Dunne, Rosemary Rea and Aiveen O Shea, the scores did not come. The half-time read Mary Immaculate College 2-03 UL 1-00.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half appoint from Mulcahy and 2 from Carroll pushed Mary Immaculate College further ahead before Naomi Carroll got onto a sliotar in the square and with 2 flicks she put the ball over the line for the college’s third goal. She soon followed up with another point scored from almost the end-line. U.L. got a second goal when one of their forwards was first to react to a sliotar that rebounded off the crossbar into the square. This spurred on the Mary Immaculate College ladies and Katie Campbell broke through for another point and this was followed up by a goal from Emma Dunne who found herself unmarked 10 metres from goal and she struck it over the head of the U.L. goalkeeper. With 3 minutes to go Katie Campbell was first to the sliotar when the UL goalie made a brilliant save from Naomi Carroll and she made no mistake to get Mary Immaculate College’s 5th goal. Before the end U.L. scored a point to leave the final score Mary Immaculate College 5-08 University of Limerick(2) 2-01

Captain Maireád Ryan received the cup from Cumann Camogaiocht Comhairle Ardoideachais. She praised the work of Eamonn Cregan, Gearoid Power and Shane Nolan in preparing the team for the final.
