Mary Immaculate College recipient of the Outstanding International Student Satisfaction 2016 Award
There was great cause for celebration at Mary Immaculate College (MIC) recently when it was announced that MIC was the recipient of the Outstanding International Student Satisfaction 2016 Award and a Gold Medal.
The StudyPortals’ International Student Satisfaction Awards are based on thousands of reviews and opinions from international students studying in Europe. Among the Irish 3rd level institutions that received sufficient reviews to be eligible for the awards, a total of 5 received ratings ranging from "excellent" (at least 9 out of 10) to "outstanding" (at least 9.5 out of 10) with Mary Immaculate College receiving the highest ranking in Ireland.
Earlier this year StudyPortals published a report entitled Key influencers of International Student Satisfaction. The report gives a unique insight into what students think about studying abroad by analysing comments made by international students on the student experience exchange platform, www.STeXX.eu This site allows students to give their study abroad experience a score out of 10, stating their reasons for giving that score, essentially revealing whether or not they were happy with the experience, and why. With thousands of these comments available, it was possible to make an in-depth analysis of what international students in Europe are content with, and where they would like to see improvements.
According to Joran van Aart, Director of Student Value at StudyPortals, “We award a StudyPortals Award for International Student Satisfaction to those universities who have achieved very high student ratings. The award is given only to the universities that receive sufficient reviews and consistently achieve outstanding to very good student reviews on StudyPortals' study experience website”.
Reviews of MIC with a 10/10 rating on www.STeXX.eu included Michelle Liles’s, from the US, who said of her time at MIC; “You meet the most incredible people during this experience. You create friendships with people all over the world that will last a life time. You also get to experience the culture of that country and city, which is like no other”.
While Clancy Coonradt said that MIC has “…. smaller class sizes allowing for a personal touch. The lecturers are accommodating for any language or tutoring needed. The Irish students are welcoming and easy to associate with”.
One international student who would certainly agree with MIC receiving this award is Christine Burnell
from Maine, US, who is currently studying Early Childhood Care and Education
at MIC and is a participant on the Education in Ireland Student Ambassador Programme.
Speaking on her experience in MIC to date she said; “The International Office at Mary Immaculate College kept in constant contact with me for the six months before I even moved to Ireland. They were very helpful and made me feel so welcome”.
Commenting on the award Ms. Holly Cowman, Director of the International Office, said; “We are absolutely delighted with this award. MIC has a vibrant international community, collaborating with more than 50 partner universities and colleges in Europe, North America and Australia, and hosts over 70 international students annually. These students all make a profound contribution to our community, not just academically but also culturally, enriching the fabric of student life at MIC. We are delighted that they would rate their student experience at Mary Immaculate College 10 out of 10!”.
