The History Department offers a range of undergraduate courses with the main concentration on Irish history from prehistoric times to the present day. There are modules on European and World history from the eighteenth century to the late twentieth century and on North American history from the colonial era to the contemporary period.
In addition to these general survey courses there are analytical studies of special themes: Irish Nationalism, Irish Unionism, Irish Prehistory and the Theory and Practice of History.
There are no specific admission requirements: students who did not take the subject to Leaving Certificate level are very welcome as are mature students. Teaching in the Dept. is by lecture, seminar and group discussion. Independent reading and original thinking is encouraged and cultivated.
The qualities developed through studying History, comprehension, investigation, analysis, organisation and coherent presentation are those particularly sought after by employers. You will find, therefore, that a history degree offers access to a wide range of employment and postgraduate opportunities.
In addition to teaching and administration, work in archives, museums, art galleries and libraries can be considered. Journalism, information technology and law are other appropriate aspirations for history graduates.
