
Health & Safety Induction
New staff members must attend a Health and Safety Induction session as soon as possible after commencement of employment. The Health and Safety Induction session will introduce new staff to the health and safety policy and procedures of the College.

Occupational First Aid Course
Occupational first aid training courses are provided onsite at the College by the Health and Safety Office to maintain an adequate number of trained first aiders. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work, General Application Regulations 2007 (Occupational First Aid S.I. No. 299), there is a requirement on employers based on a risk assessment to have a sufficient number of Occupational First Aiders trained and deployed in the workplace.
At the end of the course there is a short exam, after which the staff member will receive a Certificate in Occupational First Aid. The Occupational First Aid certificate is valid for two years. This training course will deal with how to react to common accidents that occur in the workplace, or in the home, until medically qualified personnel arrive.

The course is structured in accordance with the HSA's guidelines on First Aid at Places of Work. Instructors and examiners are on the register at the National Ambulance Training School maintained on behalf of the Health and Safety Authority.
Occupational First Aid Refresher Course
This is a one day Level 5 Fetac Certified Occupational First Aid Refresher course which updates currently certified occupational first aiders. This refresher course ensures first aiders keep up to date with developments in Occupational First Aid practices, changes in legislations and relevant guidance. Upon completion of the course, participants complete a written examination (Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ's)) and practical skills assessed. The certificate is valid for two years.

Fire Warden Course
In the event of an emergency (or fire evacuation drill) each building must have a sufficient number of Fire Wardens to check on the efficient evacuation of their part of the building, assist staff and students to gather at the external assembly points, and liaise with the evacuation coordinator in terms of missing persons or the location and type of fire. On completion of the Fire Warden course delegates will have a clear understanding of their role as a Fire Warden and the Fire Evacuation Procedures in the College.

Fire Safety Training
A training course on the selection and use of the correct fire fighting equipment has been organised to ensure that MIC staff are competent in the effective use of portable fire extinguishers. On completion delegates will have a clear understanding of fire safety and the use of fire extinguishers to extinguish small fires in the workplace.

All employees especially those with a responsibility for fire safety duties in the workplace.

Manual Handling
Staff engaged in manual handling tasks are required to receive training in assessment of loads and how to lift and handle loads safely. Due to the wide variety of manual handling tasks, the course content will include both instruction and practical training.
Aim / Objectives:To Increase awareness of safe manual handling of loads and to reduce the risk of occupational injury while carrying out manual handling tasks in the workplace. To identify the skills and techniques involved in safe lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving a load. To gain practice and gain feedback on these skills and techniques. To comply with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, The Safety Health and Welfare at Work, (General Application) Regulations 2007.
Who should attend?
Any person who is involved in manual handling in the College and wants to learn how to conduct a personal risk assessment and move and handle loads safely.
Course Content
A Practical and highly participative approach will be used throughout. When theoretical material is introduced, it will be related to relevant manual handling tasks encountered by employees in the course of their work. The focus will be on actual situations with realistic solutions.

Office Ergonomics & VDU Risk Assessment
This course is suitable for staff who use a Visual Display Unit, i.e. a Computer screen for more than 1 hour per day.
The course is designed to provide you with the skills, advice and information necessary to ensure that you can organise your work environment (chair/desk/VDU etc) to minimise risk to your safety and health.
