Autumn Semester

GE 4711 Deutsche Sprache, Literatur und Kultur 1

An introduction to German language, culture, history and literature of the twentieth century through the discussion of film, fictional and non-fictional texts and intensive language practice.

The grammar lecture in the language section focuses on the consolidation and extension of existing (second level) grammatical knowledge. The accompanying language tutorial, conducted in small groups, focuses on applying grammatical structures to oral and written communication skills.

Feature and documentary film as well as newspaper articles are used to highlight the major political developments and their impact on the lives of ordinary citizens focusing on the period before the Second World War, 1900-1939. Reading and discussion in class of a literary text shall provide further access to this period in German history, as well as introduce reading techniques and principles of textual analysis. The module consists of 4 contact hours in total.

GE Ab Initio 1

In the culture lecture film, newspaper articles and secondary sources are used to highlight aspects of German-speaking cultures such as Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Particular emphasis is given to the themes of identity and alterity (gender, ethnic, national and regional) as well as to everyday culture (see GE4711). The grammar component in the language section provides an introduction to grammatical structures of the German language. The accompanying intensive language tutorials (3 contact hours), conducted in small groups, focus on applying grammatical structures as well as developing oral and written communication skills. In this semester ab initio students have 5 contact hours in total, 4 of which focus on the acquisition of language skills. This module is aimed at students without or with very basic German language skills.

 

Spring Semester

GE4712 Deutsche Sprache, Kultur und Literatur 2

This module continues all aspects of the work begun in 4711 in a similar course structure.
The language element, consisting of grammar lecture and language tutorial, continues the intensive practice of grammatical structures and vocabulary work on Grundstufe level begun during the autumn semester.
In the literature/culture element important issues in German society from 1939 to the present are highlighted through the use of film, newspaper excerpts, literary texts and other media. Particular emphasis is given in this semester to the political and cultural division and re-unification of Germany after 1945, which is also reflected in everyday life.
The module consists of 4 contact hours in total.

GE Ab Initio 2

An introductory survey of structures and trends in German society highlights important issues in German society from 1939 to the present. Particular emphasis is given in this semester to the political and cultural division and re-unification of Germany after 1945, which is also reflected in everyday life (see GE4712).
The grammar lecture and language tutorials continue the intensive practice of grammatical structures, vocabulary work and oral language skills begun during semester 1. Students must obtain a minimum grade of C3 at the end of this semester in order to progress into second year.

Autumn Semester

GE 4713 Deutsche Sprache und Linguistik 1

The module consists of grammar, translation, writing skills and linguistics. The grammar lecture explores grammatical structures at Mittelstufe level. The translation course focuses on the development of basic German-English translation skills. Communication skills are further developed through written and oral discussion of topical issues such as emigration, women, family and travel.

The linguistics lecture introduces students to basic sounds (phonetics) and sentence structures (syntax) of German. The module consists of 5 contact hours in total.

GE 4723: Deutsche Literatur und Kultur 1

The module provides an overview of the history of modern German literature and society from the late eighteenth to the late nineteenth century. Students are introduced to the literature of the Enlightenment, Storm and Stress, Weimar Classicism, Romanticism, Vorm„ rz, Realism and Naturalism.

It also aims to provide students with an insight into the structure(s) of German society during the above periods. Selected topics for exploration include the rise of the middle classes in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the difficult beginnings of a German democracy and the development of nationalism and the founding of the German nation state.

Spring Semester

GE 4714 Deutsche Sprache und Linguistik 2

An extended survey of Mittelstufe grammar. Theory and practice of English-German translation. Improvement of students’ oral, aural and writing skills in German through the discussion of a range of subjects relevant to social and cultural trends in contemporary Germany, Austria and Switzerland. These include city and country, environmental issues, education, immigration and the multicultural society. the linguistics lecture continues work begun in the autumn semester, focusing this term on morphology and semantics.The module consists of 5 contact hours in total.

GE 4724 Deutsche Literatur und Kultur 2

The module continues the work begun in GE 4723. Attention this term focuses on an overview of the history of German literature and society from the late nineteenth century to the present. Students are introduced to the literature of periods such as early modernism, high modernism, National Socialism and post-1945.

The society element involves an examination of selected topics, such as mass culture and modernism, gender and modernism, politics and culture between 1933 and 1945, "Tr mmerfrauen", post-1945 protest movements in FRG and GDR, "Die Wende" etc.

OC4310 and OC4320 Off Campus Programme

In third year B.A. students spend an academic year / semester abroad, either as a student at a German, Austrian or Swiss university or as an English language assistant at a German or Austrian secondary school.

The year abroad gives students the opportunity to improve their language skills as well as to get to know a foreign culture at first hand and broaden their personal horizons.

GE 4717 Deutsche Sprache und Linguistik 3

The final year language components continue work on advanced complex grammatical structures with the aim of developing a high degree of fluency and correctness in spoken and written German. Particular emphasis is placed on stylistic improvement and language awareness in translation and Writing Skills classes as well as in the language tutorial. In the linguistics lecture students are introduced to sociolinguistics, focusing on issues such as regional and social differentiation in the German language. The module consists of 5 contact hours in total.

 

GE 4727 Deutsche Literatur und Kultur 3

This module explores various movements within literature and the arts during specific periods, such as Vormärz, Fin de Siècle, New Objectivity, New Subjectivity etc. Emphasis here is focused on addressing such movements within national and international contexts. The society element deals with social change during the periods chosen above. The module consists of 3 contact hours in total.

 

Spring Semester

GE 4718 Deutsche Sprache und Linguistik 4

The module continues the language work of GE 4717 and revises important grammatical structures. The linguistics lecture will focus on language and gender, i.e., "political correctness" in the language of politics, advertising, education etc. The module consists of 5 contact hours in total.

GE 4728 Deutsche Literatur und Kultur 4

This module examines aspects of regional, national, and ethnic identity in the German-speaking world. Issues dealt with include problems of self-definition in Switzerland, Austria, former East-Germany and West Germany, representations of the "Jew" in German culture, multiculturalism in contemporary German society, etc. The module consists of 3 contact hours in total.
