Postgraduate Studies

German Studies in Mary Immaculate College (University of Limerick) combines both language and cultural studies, with a particular focus on intercultural communication. The undergraduate curriculum is informed by a broad interpretation of culture, which interprets film, literature and everyday discourse as expressions of particular cultures. Students thus acquire language and intercultural skills which are essential in an increasingly globalised and multi-cultural society.

This focus is reflected in staff research fields, ranging from literature, film and cultural studies to intercultural communication and teaching methodology. German Studies welcomes applications for research projects leading to the degrees of MA and PhD in the broad areas listed below. We provide a supportive and encouraging environment for postgraduate students.

Mary Immaculate College is offering Assistantships for graduates wishing to do a MA or PhD in German Studies. The thesis can be in English or German. Research areas include, but are not restricted to:

The Assistantships are worth €6,600 per year and also include a fee waiver for a maximum of 3 years. Assistantships normally involve the teaching of tutorials, and as such may be of interest to those with an existing teaching qualification. Entry requirement is a degree in German and/or sufficient language competency.

Proposals and applications should be submitted to the Postgraduate Office, Mary Immaculate College, S.C.R., Limerick, Ireland.
