The Geography Department at Mary Immaculate College provides a supportive environment for students wishing to undertake research degrees, both to Masters (MA) and Doctoral (PhD) level. Supervision is available in the following specialist areas:

 

Economic, Urban and Rural Geography:

• Regional and local development
• Urbanisation and urban growth in Ireland
• Rural restructuring
• Social exclusion

 

Historical and Political Geography:

• Historical geography
• Political geography and governance
• Geography of gender

 

Environmental Geography:

• Ecological Responses
• Palaeolimnology/Palaeoecology
• Environmental Reconstructions
• Environmental change

Entry Requirements

General requirements and regulations follow those set out by the University of Limerick. While the minimum entry requirement for both the research MA and PhD is a 2:2 honours primary degree, it is likely that successful candidates will have a 2:1 honours degree or higher.

 

Postgraduate Support

There is a range of financial mechanisms to support post-graduate research in geography. This includes a limited number of assistantships.
