Four guest speakers have been invited to come to Mary Immaculage College by the Department of French Studies this month. Our first guest will be Prof. John Flower (University of Kent) who will give a talk on 1st March entitled 'Yankees go home!' The American Presence in France from 1945 to 1965 as part of the 2010 Arts Faculty Seminar Series (click here to find out more about the AFSS and download podcasts of the talks). Ms Tanya Flanagan (national coordinator for the Modern Languages in Primary Schools Initiative) will be our second guest. She will come on 3rd March to talk to our first-year students about the teaching of French to primary school pupils in Ireland. Our third guest will be Dr Éamon Ó Ciosáin (National University of Ireland, Maynooth) who will give a talk (as part of the 2010 AFSS) on 16th March entitled 'Homeless troops and banished men'? Exile and migration among the Irish in France, 1590-1792. Finally, Dr Georges Le Brusque (University of Limerick) will give a lecture to our second-year students in week 10 on the fourth part of Zola's novel Germinal.

Dr Alan English, Head of French at St Patrick's College Drumcondra (Dublin City University) came to Mary Immaculate College as guest lecturer on Wednesday 3rd February to make a general presentation of Balzac's Le Père Goriot to our second-year BA and BEd students. It is hoped that the Department of French Studies at MIC and the Department of French at SPD will have further opportunities to collaborate in the future.

Bonne année ! And the year begins well for us in the Department of French Studies since we have the pleasure of welcoming our first PhD students: David Ledent (from France) and Mamadou Abdoulaye Ly (from Senegal). The Department of French is pleased to announce the nomination of a new external examiner in the person of Prof. Tim Unwin (University of Bristol). Prof. Unwin is a renowned specialist of French Studies. Click here to find out more about him.

The French team is currently designing some brand new modules to replace some of the existing ones from the academic year 2010-2011. “The French & Love”, “The Formation of the Modern Self”, “Crime & Justice” and “Reason & Sensibility” are some of the new module titles under consideration...
