Degree of Master of Education (M.Ed.)

The Master of Education degree programme is a two-year, part-time programme presented through a combination of weekend study and independent study.  The programme covers theories, principles and practices in contemporary educational settings and is designed for all those interested in enhancing their professional knowledge, understandings and skills.  Teaching and learning methods include; lectures, workshops, presentations, visiting speakers and supervised research.  Graduates of the programme are working as teachers, principals, inspectors, lecturers, and researchers in schools, colleges, universities at home and abroad. Graduate Diploma / M.Ed. in Adult and Further Education

Recent policy developments in Irish education highlight the importance of high-quality teacher preparation for the adult and further education sectors. The principles underpinning the programme emphasise teacher knowledge, relationships and core values. The Graduate Diploma is taught full-time over one academic year using a blend of learning situations (onsite, online and teaching practice).  The course offers a progression option to a Master’s degree in Year 2, subject to certain achievement criteria. Graduate Diploma / M.Ed. in Information and Communication Technology

This course consists of a one-year taught programme for a Graduate Diploma in ICTs in Primary Education with the possibility of a further year for a Masters Degree (M.Ed.). Entry to the Masters Programme depends on the achievement of a specified minimum QCA in the Graduate Diploma. It then involves attending one taught module in Research Methods and undertaking a substantial dissertation on an approved topic. The course is jointly run by the Education Department and the Department of Mathematics & Computer Studies. Graduate Certificate/ Diploma / M.Ed. in Professional Studies in Education

The Graduate Certificate Professional Studies in Education is a one-year part-time programme providing an academic qualification for teachers in professional studies. It provides an optional progression route to a Graduate Diploma and Master’s Degree in Years 2 and 3. The programme is designed to appeal to a broad range of teachers, including those who wish to develop their own practice, independently and in collaboration with others, deepen their understanding of curriculum as process and leadership for learning, and extend their skills and knowledge for teaching in particular subject areas or for carrying out particular roles such as mentoring and curriculum leadership.
