Social, Personal and Health Education
Social, Personal and Health Education provides particular opportunities to foster the personal development, health and well-being of the child and to help him/her to create and maintain supportive relationships and become an active and responsible citizen in society. Through an SPHE programme children can develop a framework of values, attitudes, understandings and skills that will inform their actions and decisions in these areas of their lives both now and in the future.
(SPHE Curriculum, Teacher Guidelines, 1999).
SPHE aims to help you to develop an understanding of the key principles of Health Education and Health Promotion and to apply these principles to your personal and professional lives. You will be enabled to become familiar with the content of the SPHE curriculum, to critically evaluate a variety of teaching methodologies and resources and to appreciate the value of SPHE in the child’s overall development. SPHE will be explored in the broader context of the Health Promoting School. For further details on the Health Promoting School click here: www.schoolsforhealth.eu
Many resources on SPHE and on Health Promotion in general are available from the Health Promotion Office, Mary Immaculate College, Room G06.
