Taught Postgraduate Programmes in Education
Master’s in Education (M.Ed.)
The first taught postgraduate programme to be offered in Mary Immaculate College was a taught Master's in Education (M.Ed.). This part-time course was launched in February, 1996. This is a two-year, part-time, taught programme. The academic programme structure consists of four core taught modules, one applied research project (Modular equivalent: One Module) and a dissertation of 20,000-25,000 words (modular equivalent: 5 modules). The programme is offered to suitably qualified teachers at both primary and post-primary level. Since its introduction the first cohort of students has successfully completed the programme and been conferred with an M.Ed. degree. A further cohort is set to graduate in the current academic year.
Masters of Arts in Educational Psychology (MAEP)
The MAEP at MIC commenced in Sept 2010. This is a two year full time professional training course. The next intake is planned for 2012. This programme is designed to prepare trainees for practice as educational psychologists in a range of settings. The MAEP is designed to comply with the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) accreditation criteria and the accreditaion process in underway.
Graduate Diploma/M.Ed. (See List below)
Each Graduate Diploma programme consists of between four and six taught modules and students who achieve an overall minimum standard of Honours 2:1 may opt to transfer to an M.Ed. programme. To successfully complete the M.Ed. programme students are required to complete a research methods module and to present a dissertation of 20,000-25,000 words in the subject area selected for the Graduate Diploma.

Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary Teaching)
This course is designed for graduates with university degrees who wish to teach in primary schools. The course consists of three semesters each lasting fifteen weeks.

Graduate Diploma / M.Ed. in Special Educational Needs
This post-graduate programme is for teachers working in special schools, special classes or for learning support or resource teachers in mainstream primary or post-primary schools and in other services. The Graduate Diploma/M.Ed. in Learning Support is now integrated into this combined course.

Graduate Diploma / M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education
Comprising nine modules, the Graduate Diploma in Early Childood Education is an intensive one-year, part time programme which is deisned to respond to the need of the affirmative, in-career development opportunities for teachers of infant children. Candidates who reach the required standard in the Graduate Diploma are eligible to progress onto the Masters programme.

The Graduate Diploma/M.Ed. in Religious Education programme was introduced in response to the increasing demand for more academic and professional training courses in Religious Education. Prospective students include teachers of Religious Studies/Religious Education - especially those who do not have any formal academic qualification in the area of Theology, Religious Studies, Religious Education, pastoral workers, members of boards of management, etc.

Graduate Diploma / M.Ed. in the Teaching of Science & Technology (Primary School)
This course is designed to provide practising teachers with a holistic approach to the teaching of Primary Science and Technology. It will introduce teachers to the process model of scientific and technological skills, while including immersion in the philosophical background to the teaching of Science and Technology.
