M.A. in Music Education

 

From September 2003 onwards, Mary Immaculate College will offer a degree course leading to the award of Master of Arts in Music Education. This will be the first ever taught Masters programme in Music Education to be offered in Ireland. The course will involve an exploration of music and music learning processes from a range of social science perspectives and will involve interdisciplinary studies in Education, Music and other related fields. The course will be offered in a choice of 2 formats, with participants choosing either a one-year full-time or a two-year part-time programme. Participants will be required to complete five modules and a dissertation.
The course is intended for:

(i) Teachers in primary, post-primary or music schools
(ii) Community/Outreach and Curriculum Support personnel.

Programme Outline

Part-time Mode (2 years)

The part-time course requires 6 contact hours per week over two semesters of 15 weeks during Year One. An additional 3 contact hours are required during the first semester of Year Two. Taught modules will normally be delivered in the evenings. Some components may also require Saturday morning attendance. Additional day-long seminars and workshops may be included, as appropriate.

Dissertation work will be carried out in Year Two.

Full-time mode (1 Year)

The full-time course requires 9 contact hours during the first 15-week semester and 6 contact hours during the second 15-week semester. Delivery will be the same as for the part-time course.

Dissertation work will be carried out during the same academic year.

Music in Education
Conceptions of Music Education; Critical Perspectives on Methodologies; Curriculum and Assessment; Developmental Aspects of Music Teaching and Learning
Practicum
Student-directed learning based on professional interests;
Individually directed study related to practices in Composing, Performing and Listening, or combinations of these; Observation and/or Participation

Dissertation

Students will be required to undertake substantial research leading to a final Dissertation of 20,000 - 25,000 words

 
 
Entry Requirements

Applicants will hold: (a) an honours primary degree with music and will also hold a post-graduate qualification in education or (b) an honours primary degree in education with music.

In certain cases, applicants with equivalent, appropriate qualifications along with relevant professional experience will be considered.
