Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary Teaching)

This is a full time professional diploma designed to allow individuals, already having graduate status, to qualify to teach in primary and elementary schools.

Aims of the programme

  • To enable the student teacher to require a mastery and competence in all of the curriculum areas of the Primary School, inclusive of Visual Arts, English, Gaeilge, Mathematics, Music, Drama and Language, Physical Education, Religious Education, Social, Environmental and Scientific Education, Social, Personal and Health Education. In addition, History of Education, Philosophy of Education, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology and Sociology of Education will contribute to an understanding of the educator's knowledge base, as will the exploration of major educational issues.
  • Teaching practice is an integral course component. Microteaching and practical classroom experience encounters have been designed to accommodate a gradual initiation, building towards extended end of semester teaching practice.
  • The course will be an independent, separate, free-standing programme of training, providing students with the theoretical, professional and practical elements for primary teaching.

Programme Content

  • The course consists of 14 taught modules and four Teaching Practice modules over 3 semesters. Each semester is of 15 weeks duration.
  • All participants must spend a period in the Gaeltacht during the course. This period will follow the first semester.
  • On-going assessment will be conducted in each semester. This assessment will be conducted by a combination of course work, essays and end of semester examination.
  • The Graduate Diploma will be awarded at Honours I, 2.I, 2.2 and Pass levels, subject to the proviso that students obtain the minimum average QPV of 2.7 on TP5722, TP5713 and TP5723 to qualify for the award of the Diploma at honours level.
