Graduate Diploma / Masters in the Teaching of Science and Technology (Primary Education)

This course is designed to provide practising teachers with a holistic approach to the teaching of Primary Science and Technology. It will introduce teachers to the process model of scientific and technological skills, while including immersion in the philosophical background to the teaching of Science and Technology.


Aims of the programme

  • To give an understanding of the need to apply cognitive theory in the development of appropriate instructional models in the teaching of Science and Technology
  • To develop a scientifically and technologically literate teaching community having a basic understanding of the fundamental scientific and technological concepts
  • To familiarise primary school teachers with a wide range of methodologies currently employedin the teaching of Science and Technology
  • To give participants an insight into the range of curriculum materials available for the teaching of Science and Technology
  • To allow teachers to gain confidence in their ability to teach Science and Technology through immersion in the process skills of scientific and technological enquiry.

Programme Content


Graduate Diploma


The Graduate Diploma programme consists of ten modules. Nine of these are taught modules while a further module would be undertaken in classroom-based research

 
 

M.Ed.


Those who obtain a 2nd Class Honours Grade 1 in the Graduate Diploma will be eligible to transfer to the M.Ed. programme, which will involve one year part-time study by research and writing of a dissertation on an approved topic. All students will be required to undertake a module in Research Methods and an Applied Research Project prior to undertaking the dissertation.

 

Entry Requirements

The programme is offered to suitably qualified teachers at both primary and post-primary level. Candidates will normally be expected to meet the following requirements: an appropriate Bachelor's Degree or equivalent professional qualification with three years approved teaching experience
