Graduate Diploma / Masters in Religious Education

Aims of the programme

The Graduate Diploma/M.Ed. in Religious Education responds to needs emerging from the radically altered context of Religious Education. This programme is designed to achieve the following aims:

  • To assist students in responding to present and emerging cultural and religious challenges in schools
  • To enhance students' professional qualification in Religious Education and prepare them to become subject leaders
  • To give students a comprehensive and critical grounding in contemporary issues in Religious Education
  • To relate and apply theological reflection to a variety of educational contexts (primary/post-primary/adult).

Programme Outline

The Graduate Diploma/M.Ed. in Religious Education is a part-time evening programme.

  • Graduate Diploma: Consists of eight taught modules including core and elective modules studied over a period of two years.
  • Transfer to M.Ed. in Religious Education: Through achieving 2.1 (or higher) in the Graduate Diploma.
  • M.Ed. in Religious Education: Added to the Graduate Diploma - one year of part-time study to consist of one taught module in Educational Research Methods and the writing of a dissertation on an approved topic.

  • Aspects of the Resurrection
  • Celtic Religion and Spirituality
  • Exegesis of the Hebrew Scriptures
  • Key Figures in Religious Thought
  • Religion and Gender
  • Religion and Science
  • Spirituality: Sources and Traditions
  • Theology of Ministry

(from time to time, other modules may be made available as electives in the programme)

Entry Requirements

The normal requirement for entry to the Graduate Diploma in Religious Education programme is a primary degree in education OR a primary degree in a relevant discipline and a professional education qualification (for example HDE, PGCE). Applicants with approved equivalent qualifications or substantial relevant experience may also be considered. Final selection may require attendance for interview.
