RELIGION AND THE PUBLIC GOOD:

FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL

October 10  11 , 2012

Mary Immaculate College is celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council by hosting a conference about religion and the good of society.

Vatican II was a defining event not just for the Catholic Church but also for wider society, partly because the Declaration on Religious Liberty (Dignitatis Humanae) enunciated new parameters about how the Church should relate to both society and the state.  However the world of the 1960's is quite different from that of today.  Religion is back on the world stage, yet it is often viewed not as a public good but as something divisive which needs to be managed.  This has led to new tensions over the meaning and practical implications of religious freedom in Western democracies.
