Paul Collins studied at Trinity College Dublin, the Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music and Drama, the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, where he completed his PhD on the stylus phantasticus and its expression in free keyboard music of the north German Baroque (published by Ashgate in 2005).
His research interests embrace music theory during the Baroque, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century keyboard music, issues in the performance of baroque music, music lexicography during the Baroque, and nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Catholic church music. He has contributed to The Diapason, Irish Musical Studies (vol. 9) and the Dictionary of Irish Biography, and is assistant style editor and an advisory editor for the Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland. As an organist, he has given recitals in Ireland, Italy, and the US.
