Lecturer in Music
Dr Michael Murphy studied at University College Cork (BMus, PhD), St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra (Grad Dip Ed, primary teaching) and Trinity College Dublin (MSc ICT in education).
Before coming to the College in 2001 he was a primary teacher and lecturer in UCC.
His research interests focus on music in Ireland and Poland in the nineteenth century.
Since its inception in 2003 he has been a member of the Council of the Society for Musicology in Ireland and has acted as its Honarary Secretary, Honarary Membership Secretary and Treasurer.
He is a Research Associate with the Research Foundation for Music in Ireland.
He sings with Limerick-based choirs and regularly conducts the Mary Immaculate College Choral Society. He plays double bass with the University of Limerick Orchestra and other local ensembles.
From time to time he broadcasts documentaries on RTÉ lyric fm, and is currently preparing programmes on Ireland's national anthems and visiting virtuosi to Ireland in the nineteenth century. See 'Publications' for links to some of these programmes.
