Gareth Cox studied at Trinity College Dublin, the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and the University of Freiburg where he received his doctorate in musicology under Prof. Hermann Danuser on the early piano works of Anton Webern (published as Anton Weberns Studienzeit, Frankfurt: Peter Lang Verlag, 1992). He taught at the Städtische Musikschule Offenburg and returned to Ireland in 1993 to the Department of Music at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick where he is now Senior Lecturer and Head of Department.
He is co-editor (with Axel Klein) of Irish Music in the Twentieth Century (Dublin: Four Courts Press, 2003) and The Life and Music of Brian Boydell (Dublin: Irish Academic Press, 2004) and is a contributor to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, Komponisten der Gegenwart, the Dictionary of Irish Biography, and a subject-editor and contributor for The Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland (Dublin: UCD Press, 2013). He is currently Executive Editor of the Journal of the Society for Musicology in Ireland and a past Chairperson of the Council of Heads of Music in Higher Education. Recent publications include Seóirse Bodley (Dublin: Field Day Publications, 2010) and Irish Musical Analysis (co-edited with Julian Horton) (Dublin: Four Courts Press, 2014).
