The Geography Department has a strong commitment to research. Staff research interests range from urbanisation, regional and local development and governance, and historical geography on the human side of the discipline, to environmental change, palaeoecology and the reconstruction of past environments on the physical side.
The Department has particular strengths in applied and policy-oriented research, and members of faculty have engaged in contract research and consultancy work with local, regional and national agencies in both the voluntary and statutory sectors.
The Department is a formal collaborator in the National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA) established in 2001, and in the Irish Social Science Platform (ISSP) launched in 2008, both of which have been funded by the Irish Government’s Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions. The Department is also currently in receipt of research funding from the Environmental Protection Agency.
